 Padua is also known as the city of St Anthony. It is one of Italy's greatest centres of Arts. It used to be the most important town for the people of Venetto and was one of the most prosperous cities of the Roman Empire. Still remain of this time the ruins of the amphitheatre, bridges and valuable exhibits that can be seen at the Civic museum.
Monuments:
Basilica Del Santo is dedicated to St Anthony. Its construction started in 1232. This basilica is a temple of the faith and features gems of art. It is surrounded by other monuments including Donatello's statue of Gattamelata and the ST george's oratory.
Italy's oldest university has welcomed many masters and scholars from the whole Europe. It was built in 1222.
Arts:
Giotto masterpieces can be admired at the Capella degli Scrovegni. Is art was followed by Guariento, Altichiero and G. de Menabuoi who have left many beautiful fresco cycle. Donatello and Mantegna are also two important characters of Padua's art.
